Dear Friends,
The Tennessee Society of Mayflower Descendants hit a milestone this past year of 75 years and it couldn't have been possible without your support! Thank you! Let me share and list some of our accomplishments below:
1. We celebrated our 75th Anniversary with recognition of members of 20 to 50 plus years with gifts and certificates.
2. We continue to offer quality programs such as one given by author, historian and noted attorney Jack McCall, Jr., Esq. who shared the WWII story of his father who was from Franklin, TN, stationed in the Pacific. Our next meeting in November is on the 2nd and our guest speaker will be Kem Hinton, FAIA, accomplished architect, historian, author, who designed much of Nashville's modern landscape. He will speak on the historical significance of some of the buildings around Nashville and beyond.
3. We awarded our first $1000 Roger L. Young Scholarship.
4. Our first philanthropy was established with Second Harvest Food Bank. We felt this was an appropriate way to give back to those who may be suffering as our ancestors did so many years ago.
5. We aligned ourselves with the East Tennessee Historical and Genealogical Society in Knoxville and with the Tennessee Genealogy Society in Germantown, TN.
One of the purposes of our society is to promote the accurate story of our ancestors. Unfortunately, many schools are eliminating this history of survival and how the Compact was a stepping stone to the development of our country's ideals. There are so many crazy stories being circulated and we are fighting to be heard with the truth. We believe that our scholarship will help educate young people and we plan to implement art contests in the lower grades to help get our story back in the forefront. We need your help! We can't do anything without you!
Your membership includes membership with the General Society. Plymouth has so much to offer you: scholarships, trips, tours, and a wealth of information regarding your ancestor. Of your $50 dues, $35 of it goes to the General Society. At the same time, Tennessee is moving forward with a new email platform and website. You asked and we now accept credit and debit cards. However, please feel free to continue to renew by check.
Let me thank you, again, for your past participation. I encourage you to continue to honor your ancestors by renewing today. Remember. your heritage and your society are truly unique. You descend from ancestors who nobly helped to forge the beginnings of this great country. Their foresight in establishing the Mayflower Compact, as it is known today, set the cornerstone for our constitution.
I concur with our General Governor Lisa Pennington, Esq., when she said that our country needs to honor and remember the unique history of the Mayflower passengers--today more than ever. Please help us continue their story!
Kind regards,
Karen Bauer, Governor
